My research interests are directly linked to the interplay between language and society. I study social and linguistic factors that cause language variation and change, especially in multilingual contexts where speakers of Portuguese, Spanish and African languages have lived side-by-side. I am also interested in interdisciplinary approaches to explore the connection between language, culture and society, for example, by focusing on Afro-Latin American communities’ linguistic and cultural practices in contexts characterized by specific norms and ideologies that influence power relations.
