The Chair's End of Year Message

December 20, 2022

As the fall semester and calendar year draw to a close, I want to thank our alumni and friends who have made a difference in the lives of the students and faculty of the UC Berkeley Department of Linguistics. If you are contemplating year-end giving options, I hope you will consider investing in our department.

This fall semester has been challenging, but also clarifying.  The strike of academic workers at UC has made widely visible the tight financial constraints under which the UC system operates, and our department as a part of it.  Despite these challenges, here are a few things we regularly manage to do:

We represent unusual breadth, including language documentation, indigenous language revitalization, phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, language and cognition, computational modeling, historical linguistics, and sociolinguistics.

We give undergraduates at a large public university the opportunity to get to know graduate students and professors, through relatively small classes and research opportunities.

We offer the Linguistics Research Apprenticeship Practicum, in which Linguistics graduate student mentors are matched with undergraduate research apprentices, providing opportunities for both to conduct original linguistic research together.

We help to preserve and revitalize endangered languages, through The Survey of California and Other Indian Languages, an archive and research center that supports the documentation, analysis, preservation, and revitalization of the indigenous languages of the Americas.

Donor support helps us do these things.  I hope you will help us train the next leaders in research and education by making a gift.

Any amount helps! Will you consider making a gift this year?
