Linguistics events this week (September 4-11, 2020)

September 4, 2020

In and around the linguistics department in the next week:

  • Fieldwork Forum - Wednesday Sep 9 - Zoom - 3-4pm
Christine Beier and Lev Michael (UC Berkeley): Mobile tonal melodies in Iquito: analysis, elicitation, and texts.
  • Phonetics and Phonology Forum
The phonetics and phonology forum (Phorum) will be meeting on Friday, September 4 for a round robin discussion of everyone's recent and upcoming research and plans for this semester. Our first talk of the academic year will be September 11, with a presentation by Nicholas Rolle (PhD 2018) titled "First-last harmony or outward-looking allomorphy in Cilungu grammatical tone." Detailed updates can be found on the Phorum website, and if you would like the Zoom links for these meetings and/or to join the mailing list for future Phorum updates, please contact Anna Björklund (aebjorklund@berkeley.edu) or Dakota Robinson (dakota_robinson@berkeley.edu).
  • Zoom Phonology - Thursday Sep 10 - Zoom - 9-10am

Sam Zukoff (Leipzig): Another Look at Huave Mobile Affixation.
In this talk, I will employ Zukoff’s (2017, forthcoming) “Mirror Alignment Principle” framework for morpheme ordering to develop a more precise version of Kim’s (2008) alignment-based analysis of (San Francisco del Mar) Huave mobile affixation, and show how this sort of phonological analysis may provide new insights about the language’s morphosyntactic structure.
