Information for transfer students

Transfer students are an integral part of the undergraduate linguistics program; approximately a quarter of our undergraduates are transfer students. The following information might be useful for transfer students considering a linguistics major at UC Berkeley.

  • The linguistics major is somewhat unusual in that all required classes for the major are upper division classes, including the introductory class, Linguistics 100.
  • As an upper division course, Linguistics 100 must be taken at UC Berkeley.
  • Some transfer students might be interested taking Linguistics 100 the summer before they enroll at UC Berkeley, through UC Berkeley Summer Sessions. Linguistics 100 is offered every summer. Starting in Summer 2021, Linguistics 100 will be offered online as an 8-week course.
