The UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) is the university's most popular and most common study abroad program. Year-round, students have a choice of more than 150 study abroad programs in 38 countries. Each program is unique and offers students a variety of academic curriculum and opportunities for personal growth. For more information about the collection of UCEAP programs, and to plan for their study abroad experience, students should meet with a Berkeley Study Abroad Advisor.
Linguistics Department's UCEAP/Study Abroad Course Transfer Policy:
Linguistics Majors and Minors may count only 1 upper division ELECTIVE course from abroad. All other upper division requirements must be taken at UC Berkeley. Transfered courses must meet the following criteria:
- At least 50% of its content must be linguistics related
- It must be upper division level (courses numbered 100-199) and
- It must transfer as 3 semester units minimum ( 4.5 quarter units = 3 semester units)
(Note: It is possible to combine 2 Linguistics courses for the purpose of reaching 3 units if the host institution is on the quarter system).
Students may attend any institution of their choice that is approved by UCEAP.
- Students should use the course titles from UC Berkeley's Linguistics Course Catalog as a guide for selecting similar courses at their host institution. (Please note that we do not have a course database from host institutions).
- Linguistics does not pre-approve courses before students go abroad. Instead, students are asked to complete the Course Substitution Petition and provide their official syllabus upon their return to Berkeley. Then, the petition will be reviewed by the Linguistics Faculty Committee for equivalency and approval.
